The Oakwood School Systems began in a little red schoolhouse, about a mile to the south of Dayton. Constructed in classic Tudor style on ten acres of land, Oakwood High School was intended to serve the students in preparation for college. Today Oakwood High School is a public, four-year comprehensive high school and was nominated a ?National School of Excellence? by the U.S. Department of Education. Over 90% of the student population of 565 goes on to college. Every year approximately 10 members of the senior class receive recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Advanced Placement courses are offered in Studio Art, English Literature and Composition, Spanish Language, Music Theory, Physics, English Language and Composition, American History, Calculus and more.
The Kettering City School District prides itself on providing a strong academic program for our students. The young people at our middle and high schools have an opportunity to choose from more than 200 course offerings, as well as honors, career education and Tech Prep Programs. Likewise, our elementary school program offers students a challenging an enriching curriculum that includes- in addition to the traditional academic offerings- strong music, art, and computer education programs. Special programs for the gifted and disabled are also offered.
The Kettering School District has none elementary schools (grades K-5); two middle schools (grades 6-8) and one high school (grades 9-12). Enrollment is approximately 8000 students. About 80% of Kettering School District graduates go on to post-secondary education.
The Kettering School District has one of Ohio?s most comprehensive Educational Technology Programs, with five computers in every elementary classroom and state-of-the-art computer labs at the middle schools and at the high school. Academics are balanced with strong extracurricular programs, including National Honor Society, Power of the Pen, music and drama programs, Junior Council on World Affairs, student councils, academic clubs, Junior Achievement, speech and debate, Future Problem Solvers and a full range of athletic programs.
The Kettering School District takes pride in its consistently strong representation of teachers as finalists in the annual Montgomery County Council Excellence in Teaching Awards program. The district?s professional teaching staff has an average of 16 years of experience, and a majority holds master?s degrees or better. Each of the district?s 12 schools has a strong parent-teacher community organization that works tirelessly to promote a strong public education program and is dedicated to meeting the needs of every child in our district.
